Literacy Curriculum Overview

Phonics, Reading & Writing in 2nd Grade

In 2nd grade, students continue to strengthen their literacy foundation through a balance of phonics, reading, and writing instruction.

Fundations (Phonics & Word Study):
Our 2nd grade phonics program, Fundations, provides systematic and explicit instruction in phonics, spelling, and word study. Students learn to apply spelling patterns, practice fluency, expand vocabulary, and strengthen their handwriting and sentence skills. Fundations also supports reading comprehension by giving children the tools they need to decode words accurately and confidently.

Lucy Calkins Units of Study (Reading & Writing):
Through the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, students grow as readers and writers by engaging in authentic, meaningful literacy experiences.

  • Reading Workshop encourages students to build stamina, practice comprehension strategies, and develop a love of reading across a variety of genres.

  • Writing Workshop guides students through the writing process—planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing—while helping them write with clarity, detail, and purpose.

Together, these programs ensure our 2nd graders are not only learning the mechanics of reading and writing, but also discovering the joy of literacy as lifelong learners.
